My First Carve-Out Project at digatus

In the interview, working student Yuliia Kutia talks about her start at digatus and the experiences she was able to gather during her first carve-out project.
How did you come to digatus?

I’m currently studying Mathematics and Computer Science at Munich University of Applied Sciences in my second semester. To gain initial practical experience, I looked for a company where I could work as a working student. An acquaintance told me about his work as a consultant at digatus. The diverse tasks in international projects sounded particularly interesting, so I applied right away. After an interview, I was hired and have now been part of the digatus consulting team for a few months.

After onboarding and initial introductions, I was immediately involved in an exciting carve-out project. This involved an international corporation from which a division was being spun off. My team and I were responsible for the project management and implementation of the IT carve-out for the spun-off part.

What were your tasks in the project?

After I had familiarized myself with the project, I was able to take on more and more tasks. It was very varied, as I was able to handle both purely organizational activities, such as researching prices or writing protocols, as well as some technical tasks. This included, for example, supporting the creation of users in Microsoft 365 and importing mailboxes. I also supported the project team with budget planning and was able to directly apply my knowledge from my studies. The project routine also included active participation in regular meetings, both internally and with clients. I found it particularly exciting that I was involved in the carve-out project from the beginning and consequently could directly contribute to the success of the project.

What challenges did you have to overcome?

Since the area of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) was completely new to me, I first had to familiarize myself with the peculiarities and requirements. Due to the large number of users and the vast amount of information, the project was organizationally very complex and extensive, which is why it took a while to understand the various connections, structures, and responsibilities. The differences in communication between the individual groups of people also had to be taken into account.

Another challenge for me was international communication. The regular conferences with the client were always held in English, and internally we coordinated in German. As neither language is my mother tongue, I sometimes had difficulties, especially with abbreviations. That’s why I created a list of all abbreviations from the project and keep adding to it.

What experiences do you take away from the project personally?

The project is a good opportunity for me to improve my English skills and overcome my shyness. Especially at the beginning, I found it quite difficult to speak in front of other participants in large meetings or conference calls. I will be able to benefit from this both in my studies and in my later professional life.

I really enjoyed contributing my part to the carve-out project. I was able to learn a lot from my experienced colleagues and experience the varied project management routine.

Thank you for the interview and the exciting insights into your first carve-out project!
